The discovery of matter creation in neutrinoless double beta decay (0vbb) could be within reach of the next generation of experiments. Its observation would constitute the discovery of a lepton number violating process and the Majorana nature of the neutrino. A recent joint North-American — European summit identified LEGEND as a leading contender in the field thanks to its ability to conduct a discovery oriented, background free search for the process.
UK groups are already key players in LEGEND taking a prominent role in preparation for physics data taking with the LEGEND-200 detector commencing later this year at the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory. There is now an opportunity for a wider, leading UK participation in the next stage of the experiment, LEGEND-1000, that will have an unprecedented discovery potential for observing 0vbb decay down to Majorana mass values as low as 0.01 eV, fully testing the inverted ordering of neutrino masses and a substantial portion of the normal ordering phase space.
To this end, we are organising a LEGEND UK workshop open to all members of the UK particle, astro-particle and nuclear physics communities. If you are interested in neutrinoless double-beta decay, germanium detector technology or simply want to learn more about the opportunities afforded by the LEGEND project, you are warmly invited to attend.
The workshop will take place on the 31st of March at UCL, in Torrington Place Building (see “Venue” for details)
